THUNDER IN HIS MOCCASINS

Boys who follow Bat Masterson and Fast-Draw Tilghman (and there are many) will be happy with this one. Bucky Lodge longs for the exciting frontier days of his father and grandfather instead of school and milking. And his father gets him on a buffalo hunt with his uncle and the great Billy Dixon! A man's outfit and a man's work: yoking and whacking, hard riding, fights with Comanches (""red devils""). A blue norther h the caravan, but a ""snow-eater"" from the south sends them on their way again. Buck learns a thousand things he could never have learned in school. Finally they hear the buffalo running. The sound comes through the earth like ""thunder in your moccasins"". Hunters and skinner work until they drop. Buck shoots, olls skins, becomes a man in their eyes. Authenticity, obvious lessons, excitement somewhat spoiled by phoney phrases: he longs to say ""Honest, fellows, cross-my-heart-and-hope to turn-into-a-cinch-bug if I'm lying. I'm going out West!"" He ""chuckles gloatingly"". Old fashioned fare, but good realistic detail of 1874 Kansas, the Cimarron country, and the smell of buffalo.
