Directing children to rearrange books on a shell napkins on a table and blocks in empty boxes (all clarifying activities in context), Adler explains dimension by working down from 3D to 1D (a direction that makes a lot of sense here), integrating the ideas of volume, area and length into the lesson--and all without resorting to arithmetic. As Adler speaks pretty well for himself, Weiss' sketchy demonstrations, featuring two plump, whiskered humans and an omniverous goat, function as amusing commentary rather than direct (and redundant) illustrations of the concepts.
