THE SIDELONG GLANCES OF A PIGEON KICKER

This footling/footloose sequence of non-sequiturs follows a youthful cut-up Jonathan, a ""generally unpromising young man"" from, first, driving a taxicab in Philadelphia, to last, in Des Moines, renting a truck. In between, his fissionable experiences include the beau jest of the title, his bouts in bed with Mildred or on the bathroom floor with Naomi, his assorted friends--Oliver a homosexual, Winslow who steals parking tickets, while Jonathan himself indulges kleptomanic (tulip bulbs) as well as manic bursts of pointless activity. Except for the occasional cosmic conceit or odd moment, one is left to conclude that paper as well as youth is wasted on the young.
