Though these thumbnail biographies of famous North American chiefs are unimaginatively written, they form a unique collection in bringing together, in strictly factual form, the various campaigns against the white man's tragically unjust appropriation of lands. Opechancanough who terrorized Virginia in the 1620's, Massasoit's son Philip who did not hold with his father's sympathies towards the Pilgrims, Pontiac, Logan of the Cayugas, Tecumseh whose breadth of vision exceeded that of any other chief- these are the heads of tribes included. But if the narratives comment on little more than the battles and negotiations as they happened, they do indicate the common endeavours of the Indians to hold themselves together and the tragedy of a course of history that saw them inevitably undermined.
