by David Cushman Coyle ‧ RELEASE DATE: May 11, 1938
The announcement of a $1,000 prize contest by Harper's Magazine for a contribution on The American Way brought 1,750 manuscripts. The prize winner, by Coyle, and three others are included in this volume. The purpose was to open the channels of thought to a restatement and reinterpretation of ideals and traditions in the light of modern conditions. Coyle's essay is distinctly middle of the road -- liberty with security, strong government protection safeguarded by the check of public opinion. Dreher pleads for mass collectivism; Landauer for a real democracy; Johnson claims we have never had democracy -- and we still have liberty of viewpoint. Stimulating to thought but intellectual rather than emotional in appeal.
