THE NICE MURDERERS

Nice, like they say, is in the eye of the beholder. So whether or not you'll glide with this slippery item depends on whether or not Long Island's William & Lizzie Winter--professional thieves, amateur but blasÉ murderers--win you over with their Zelda-and-Scott, Nick-and-Nora shtik: cutesy sex, cheese-and-chablis in the tub, witty sang-froid while being cat-and-moused by suspicious Jacob Horowitz of Nassau County Homicide. True, their murder victim is foul enough to make anybody look nice by comparison; he's Machiavellian millionaire Piggy Ott, who bankrupts William at poker (they're old, competitive school chums), drops hints about diamonds in the Ott family safe, and appears with a gun (Wm. shoots him first) when the Winters sneak in to lift the ice. And Piggy's survivors are chips off the old blech--salacious second wife, filthy son #1 (""Harry was to innocence what acne was to skin""), psychotic son #2--so maybe you'll enjoy, enjoy while they manage to frame each other and kill each other off under the wearyingly complex supervision of the Winters, who are last seen flying from Monte Carlo to London. The really nice people here are hefty cop Jacob and equally hefty cop-wife Helen, but they're not around long enough to sort out or warm up the frosty, aren't-we-adorable criminal proceedings.
