An engaging story with an original chain of events tells how Angelo, a Sicilian boy and an orphan, finds a home for himself and a prize winning costume for the carnival. Having lived with Peppo, a restaurateur, who has never shown much concern for his welfare, Angelo finds his humdrum life changed when Peppo and his family go off to relatives for a visit and leave Angelo in the charge of Signora Cortorelli, the hat maker. In her own sometimes taciturn way, she sees to it that Angelo meets the right people:-Corrado who has a marvelous silver buckled belt and some interesting stories to tell; the village shoe man with his ""office"" by a fountain, and others. Each in turn contributes to the Spirit-of-Sicily costume with which Angelo wins his prize-and a more permanent kind of happiness. George Thompson's drawings for the story are interestingly designed and show unique perspectives of Sicilians at work and play.
