The author, a moving picture actor, premieres a presentable first novel, not great, important, but readable, intelligently motivated, decently written. Nova Scotia farmlands are the setting for Peter's return to the ancestral acres, to an aunt who hates his father, for having married her sister, and him, because he is the child of that marriage. Peter makes the grade, as a farmer, as a nephew who wins his aunt's love and trust, even to the point of giving an orphan girl her name that Peter may marry her. But the girl finds her heart doesn't belong to Peter -- and it is the aunt who steadies him and gives him new courage.
