Pat Boyle of Galway, Ireland, is the hero of some fine adventure, that comes about as a result of his emigration to America in 1847. MacKaye's work has been of uneven quality, but this is definitely to his credit, for as 17 year old Pat makes his way, there is a ring of authenticity to all he does. After a stormy voyage, his mother is employed as cook to a wealthy family and Pat makes friends with their son Wowser. By accident then, Pat meets the now famous Prof. Agassiz out walking, and the beginnings of a scientific career are established. At college, Pat comes into contact with other great lights- Holmes, Longfellow and Parkman-but he also proves himself against his former Irish contemporaries who think he has gone highbrow, and he helps Wowser find a lost uncle. Quite absorbing.
