EMMA'S VACATION

A small (7"" square) book with a large nugget of truth: it's more fun to be actively busy than to be passively entertained. Emma the bear (of Fix-It and Emma's Pet) is off for a vacation with her parents. Emma would like to climb a mountain, but Dad prefers to drive up. After a day of fast food, and rides on a boat, a bus, and a few amusement-park conveyances, Emma talks her parents into trying her kind of day--wading in the brook, climbing trees, hiking, picnicking, and telling stories-and everyone has a good time. McPhail's pen and watercolor illustrations are the chief source of charm here. The mountain landscape is lovely despite humorous exaggerations; the bears are complacently soft and round, and very much likes happy human family, Young listeners should be pleased by a story in which all profit from taking the advice of the youngest.
