ONCE OVER LIGHTLY

A bland, offhand chronicle which charts the postwar progress of John Hamilton, an adaptable young man who leaves his regiment (British) with little ambition and impetuous inclinations. An affair with an actress leads to a paid crossing to New York- as an escort to a dog, and a chance meeting there with Ann, with whom he falls in love, prompts him to sell his return passage and stay on. Some haphazard professional pursuits, first in the liquor business, then in an indoor horse-racing venture, do not further his career-but Ann is off to a bright start, first as a model, then in pictures in Hollywood. Her marriage to John, and pregnancy, put a stop to stardom there but John steps into a leading part, gets a fat contract, and when success- and another woman- go to his head, some friends intervene to bring him back to Ann.... The ""lightly"" here includes no particular grace or gaiety, achieves little more than a pretty perishable product-for rent.
