A Political Idol of Other Days"" -- such is the theme of this biography of a man who, twenty-five years ago, was the acknowledged leader of the Republican party, a conspicuous figure in politics, a well-informed historian with an engaging personality. Why did he fall to achieve his ambition? His life was a full one, he had charm and ability. This book is a scholarly study of every act of his political life, weighing the evidence, but failing to dramatize the situation. This, perhaps, limits the market to those who are politically minded, rather than to the wider field of those interested in human documents. Extremely well done, thoroughly authenticated at all points, this should appeal enormously to the student of American history, and prove an essential item for public library reference shelves and colleges. For the average bookshop, the market is almost predictable in advance.
