COUNTERGUERRILLA OPERATIONS: The Philippine Experience

Two colonels, one American, one Filipino, have put together a guide to the four most prevalent contemporary forms of protest by violence, covering prerequisites, motivation, funding, popular support, and appropriate means of contravention and nullification. The Philippine experience of having subordinated the Huks without massive foreign aid and without ones suspending elections is perhaps not quite typical of small-war situations in other parts of the world, but these two authors -- with a wealth of background upon which to draw have assessed the anti-Huk offensive in such a way as to draw from its history the most universal elements having to do with any Communist guerrilla combat. Although this is nominally too specific and technical for an average reader, the timing of publication here may be a factor: individuals concerned over the Cuban problem may look to possible parallels from the other side of the globe. The chapters of psychological warfare and the history of Filipine-American friendship have much to commend them.
