MY BACKYARD HISTORY BOOK

Intended as a sort of open classroom between hard covers, with a casual look, a seemingly random organization (""the pages are to be used in any order you like""), and a joint designation as ""The Brown Paper School,"" these mix facts, concepts, experiments, jokes, pictures, amusements, recipes, folklore, crafts, sky charts, mazes, riddles, magic tricks, family photos, old catalog ads and a kitchen sink with all the abandon of a free school kindergarten tie dying the classroom curtains. It probably works best in the science book (but only to the extent that science can be approached as so many bits and pieces), is most frustrating in math where the last thing kids who hate it and don't get it need is a lot of extraneous distraction, and degenerates to an overblown camped up nostalgia trip in the backyard history entry. But then that's only our reaction and the name of this game is whatever turns you on. . . or spins you round.
