A polite and pleasant story of young Mrs. Savage's holiday with her four children at the shore. Widowed and brooding over her dead husband's infidelities and deficiencies, Dinah is not her happiest when her twin brother comes back from the Navy. His decision that she is to go to their old Nannie's revitalizes her, and the freedom from the children makes her new friends, offers her now experiences. Her brother gets a new job, the children win the hearts of an elderly couple (who turn out to be their father's parents) and Dinah herself finds a new love. Broadly British in its social customs, distinctions, in its reticence, and in its impeccable characters and situations, this has a more relaxing effect than Thirkell titles.
