BOOMER

By the author of last year's excellent Black Lightning, (a tale of a Ceylonese black leopard), these adventures of a kangaroo strike another fresh note in the animal book world. Denis Clark's writing is vivid and vigorous as he describes Boomer's life. He is a baby when the leader of his ""mob"" is killed by a cattleman on the Australian open grassland. When his mother is killed, he's captured by some blacks who sell him to another ranching family as a pet for their daughter-and there is absorbing information on kangaroo traits and Australina life as Boomer grows, gains a human enemy and returns to the wild to become a mob leader himself. Wise choice of dramatic elements lend a story impact as strong as Boomer's punch.
