THE MYSTERY OF THE CHURCH

An excellent translation by A. V. Littledale of the distinguished French Dominican theologian's La Pentecote Chartres and of his Esquisses du Mystere de l'Eglise, this volume contains profound meditations on and a scholarly theological study of the nature of the Church. An unusual feature of the book is the emphasis put upon the role played by the Holy Spirit as the soul of the Church. The work as a whole represents a first-rate synthesis of the results of both positive and speculative theology on the subject of the Church. Some idea of the Book's contents can be obtained from scanning its chapter headings: 1. The Church and Pentecost; 2. The Church and Its Unity; 3. The Idea of the Church in St. Thomas Aquinas; 4. The Mystical Body of Christ; 5. The Life of the Church and the Consciousness of Catholicity; 6. The Holy Spirit and the Apostolic Body, Continuators of the Work of Christ. The relevance of such a work as this in connection with ecumenical movements is apparent. The well earned prestige of the author's name alone will be sufficient to recommend this volume to educated Catholics and to serious non-Catholic students of Catholicism.
