THE BREGA PATH

Winding up The Silver Call duology: more watered-down Tolkien, though less slavishly imitative than the dreadful Trek to Kraggen-Cor (p, 429). Dwarf-King Durek and his armies, aided by some men, elves, and Warrows Perry and Cotton, are attempting to reoccupy their old subterranean stronghold of Kraggen-Cor; the latter is now infested with evil spaunen and other nasty beasties. Unfortunately, the Dusk. Door is blocked by tons of rubble, and here Durek and the armies are stuck. So, Perry, Lord Klan, elf Shannon, Ursor the Baeran, and dwarves Anval, Borien, and Delk head for the Dawn-Gate, intending to follow the Brega Path underground and so come to open the Dusk-Door from the inside. They face the usual obstacles: fallen bridges, confused passageways, collapsed corridors, lurking spaunen, magical traps, etc. Meanwhile, various battles occur aboveground; Durek and company shift the rubble and force an entry to the Dusk-Door--just as Perry and friends reach it from the inside; and the good guys win in the end. Slightly better handled and more suspenseful than Volume I, the cretinous appendices notwithstanding; another fans-only item.
