CHELBURY ABBEY

There is a singular charm in Dennis Mackail's presentation of different aspects of English life. In GREENERY STREET he drew to the life a group of young married people in middle-class London; in THE SQUARE CIRCLE he captured the illusive atmosphere of an upper middle class group; in this book he has told the story of that new class in England, the Land-poor aristocrats, laden with taxation, and unprepared to most the financial responsibilities of rundown estates. There is a rather charming romance, with a side excursion in which a young -- and presumably rich -- American, plays his part.
