An experienced art director presents an album of artists--sixty-seven in all, one illustration apiece--who are in the forefront of ""the present renaissance of children's book illustration."" It's a very timely selection: a quick glance caught only two books from the late 1940's, and two as recent as 1965. The artists are divided into five groups -- The Storytellers, Poetic and Personal, Imaginary, Collage and Abstraction, The Specialists--but these questionable designations fail to detract from the usefulness of the book as a collection of representative illustrations with brief commentary. (The description of techniques is limited to basic categories--line, pencil or wash drawings, woodcut and lithography.) This is a selection, repeat, not a cross section or a survey; the only obvious omissions, by its own standards, are Ezra Jack Keats and Nonny Hogrogian. For anyone who wants to know what's new in children's book illustration, this is a good place to start.
