Devotedly set in Nova Scotia, this story is about fifteen year old Gabrielle Leblanc and her ambition to participate in the racing of the old-time schooners. She was an idealist and she loved Nova Scotia, the sea, and boats, and the only person who shared her feelings was Jean Pierre Comeau, a dreamy, drifting young man. Gabrielle's determination settles on the Nancy Kelly, owned by Jean Pierre's crusty old grandfather, and most of the book traces her efforts to find the money to outbid an offer from a resort which plans to use Nancy Kelly as a hotdog stand. Old Man Comeau turns out to be an old softy, Jean Pierre turns out to be dependable, and Gabrielle turns out to be the recipient of the Nancy Kelly, which Comeau had patched together and refitted. Rather a diluted story, but it does follow a different course from most teenage romances. That and the strong sense of atmosphere may make it a diverting change for girls.
