HATTIE RABBIT

Gackenbach's Hattie Rabbit does have an uncomely, vulnerable sort of charm, though the fact that all her rabbit friends look the same reduces her appeal--and the two stories devised for her here aren't much more individualized. In the first, Hattie wishes her mother had a long neck like Little Giraffe's mother, a long nose like the Elephant's mother, and funny feet like Mrs. Chicken's--only to consider the implications and appreciate her own mother's features. The second--which has Hattie tricking all her friends for nickels until, friendless, she decides to spend the whole 25¢ take on Peanut Brittle to win them back--is just as familiar in outline, tho Hattie's swindles are crummy enough so that this one could meet willing beginners half way.
