HOUND AND BEAR

'You have tricked me too many times,' said Bear. 'Trust me,' said Hound."" And why shouldn't Bear be trusting, since Hound always ends up the butt of his own practical jokes--missing out on a surprise birthday party when he fools Bear into sleeping all day by painting his window black, and sending his own present back with the postman because he thinks it's for Bear? The third time around there's no trick at all, just a gift-wrapped hat for Bear to cement a friendship based on little more than a facile attraction of opposites and more material tokens than many pals exchange in a whole lifetime. If it came to a choice, we'd prefer Hound's deviltry to the look-alike inanities of Mole and Troll, but as Hound's inspiration wanes visibly in just three short episodes we'd call him a fair weather friend indeed.
