How Dick Clark parlayed a summer radio job in Syracuse and a routine TV job in Philadelphia into a million-dollar career. Always a hustler, he did the usual fillins and odd shots until Bandstand needed a replacement for the arrested Bob Horn. Clark had no ear for rock but he heard opportunity knocking and the rest is a matter of record--the Philadelphia sound, Person-to-Person, a Saturday night show, money, and big business interests. Then the flip side of payola investigations but Clark, never indicted though temporarily offstage, managed to continue Bandstand, try films and, lately, host a game show. Not one of the top forty but a memento for Fifties fans.
