The plot is an old favorite used with romantic relish and a talented story-ller's attention to detail. Jane Minton is the new secretary-housekeeper to a Surrey household that comprises four children ranging in age from 14 to the edge of adulthood and a father who is not in residence. Trained to comfortable wealth, all of them start coming apart when sudden, unexpected poverty strikes. Jane copes and teaches her charges to do the same by precept and example. All of them find their perspective again and see a spot for themselves in a harder world but not without ome wild difficulties. Father returns to find--Jane.
