This is a book on Christian asceticism and mysticism by a Benedictine monk of Downside Abbey, who has published many books on spiritual subjects before this. It deals with the essentials of Catholic spirituality in a direct, concise and penetrating way. Doctrine and practice are progressively set forth in the several chapters, attention always being paid to the typical moral and psychological helps and hindrances to true spiritual development. There is something very fresh and clean about the author's whole exposition. Clear, incisive and focussed always on fundamentals, the author avoids verbosity and over-complication of issues. An excellent guide for Catholic priests and religious, as well as for the Catholic layman sincerely desirous of understanding and leading the higher spiritual life.
