Dakota, 1882. Prologue: rivalry between Joe Scott, twelve, with his gimpy race horse, Old Sam, and the new rich and arrogant neighbors, the Brooks. Main story: how Joe, his ten-year-old brother, and his friends caught the horse thieves by following old Sam's uneven tracks, then caught them a second time after the sheriff's man had let them get away-- ""A fellow has got to know how to handle those buggers."" Told almost completely in rambling, indifferently colloquial dialogue, the plot contains little excitement and no interpersonal relationships. Even the shock value of a senseless killing at the end is muted and rather confusing. Fast reading, all skin and bones.
