THE RED CAR

Basic to enthusiasm for this is enthusiasm for sports car racing. With that premise, for that market, this is a natural. A startling combination of vivid prose, touching characterization, the mysterious yen for danger put plenty of fuel into the workings. That the book stresses too safety, responsibility and love of work makes for precautionary factors. This is 16-year old Hap Adams' story, and the setting is a resort town in Colorado, where a Frenchman of shady past runs a garage- and an accident lands a wrecked M.G. -- Hap's dream car- in the shop. Hap goes to work for Frenchie, ownership of the car his goal. He makes a deal with its driver, Arata, a racing man, puts through a deal with the insurance people, and wins over his father's objections. The climax comes when frenchie and Hap win a brutal N.S.C.A. race to even a score between Arata and frenchie. It has its danger points, but is charged with momentum.
