by Donald A. Stauffer ‧ RELEASE DATE: June 21, 1949
This is a volume of fine critical elucidations of Yeats' poetry. The book has grown out of a series of lectures originally given at Johns Hopkins, and its chapters include The Search for Truth, The Medium of Poetry, The Reading of a Lyric, The Purpose of Poetry, The Progress of a Poet- all as applied to Yeats. Actually what Stauffer succeeds in doing is to give some clear insight into Yeats' philosophy, his mystical system, and above all his fabulously rich use of symbols as well as his marvelous expertness in poetic techniques. Although Stauffer's style is far from inspired, it is clear, cogent and rational. For any student of Yeats, or follower of his fine poetry who wishes a little light thrown on some of its obscurities, this book is essential reading.
