In the American Foreign Policy Library which has included States and Japan, etc., this is a serious study of France in relation to the U.S. -- past and present, and their natural affinity based on a common tradition of freedom and a community of economic interest. With a background orientation on France, her geographical position, resources, people, government, this analyzes Franco-American relations to 1939, and then through the troubled period of defeat, occupation and liberation; her economic problems (agriculture, industry, labor); her political parties, schisms and shifts in strength, the organization of the Communist Party and its threat to security; her colonies and colonial policy; and her stance today, the acceptance of the Schuman Plan and the realization that Germany is no longer the threat -- but Russia, and that survival is only possible in ""close and cooperative association"" with the members of the Atlantic Community. An appendix includes all kinds of statistical information. Excellent coverage and an orderly examination of current issues and their historical derivation.
