This volume is a dictionary of the Blessed Virgin Mary compiled in a meticulous and scholarly fashion by an able and noted English Catholic author and scholar. Arranged alphabetically, the items of reference include titles, shrines, feasts, devotions and doctrines connected with the Blessed Virgin. The work is interesting, informative and very useful in terms of handy reference. Although it is not intended to be an encyclopedia, it is fairly comprehensive in its references, duly expansive in its explanations and very competent in its treatment of theological and historical material. The items considered range from those most commonly to those least commonly known as from the simplest to those more difficult to explain. The style of writing is non-technical. Authority, clarity and order characterize the work in its entirety. It is appropriate and helpful that such a work is being published at a time when Marian studies are steadily on the increase. Priests, teachers and students of religion, the literate Catholic layman and non-Catholics wishing to be informed accurately about the Marian aspects of Catholic life, should be grateful for the appearance of a work of this nature and caliber.
