DOCK ELLIS IN THE COUNTRY OF BASEBALL

Hall, a co-author of the spring training comedy of errors Playing Around (1974), shifts his attention to former Pirate Dock Ellis, the controversial pitcher ""famous for his big mouth. . . and his Bad Attitude."" Before his recent trade to the Yankees, Ellis spent eleven years in the Pittsburgh organization and hurled a 1970 no-hitter while gaining a reputation as a ""maverick"" for his temper tantrums. The exasperating problem child of 32 seems to have been affected by ingrained racial hang-ups, a bitter divorce, and a largely unstructured lifestyle. Still, he's projected here as a gregarious team leader whose many charitable outside activities include prison work and the Black Athletes Foundation. Candid, diverting treatment of a difficult guy.
