MacFarlane, a gentleman gambler on the Riviera, is staked to his hotel bill by Paul Anstey as an entree to the game held by the wealthy Whitakers. Later he realizes how he has been used when Anstey holds up the household, forces MacFarlane to join him in the getaway along with Pia- his accomplice(?). Still later MacFarlane realizes that Anstey is a criminal lunatic- with Pia's help escapes- and returns the stolen cash and jewels in exchange for his freedom, and Pia's... From the underworld of the earlier books to the beaumonde here, more likable characters and a hotfoot which doesn't let up.
