CONNECTIONS: Short Stories by Outstanding Writers for Young Adults

Infused with warmth and discerning respect for young adults and their concerns, this collection contains both elegant and humorous treats. The titles of the short stories and the names of their creators appear as part of the jacket's type treatment--with an effect that's tantamount to a display of chocolates before the candy box is opened. Readers may taste ""one of these,"" perhaps a confrontation between a mixed-race child and his gentle, doltish teacher in Robin Brancato's ""White Chocolate."" Or how about ""one of those""--a peek at the shambling narrator's romantic pinnacle in ""A Brief Moment in the Live of Angus Bethune,"" by Chris Crutcher? Sue Ellen Bridgers creates a rich confection about cousins in ""Life's a Beach,"" so dense with detail that its themes linger despite its brevity. Colby Rodowsky, Alden R. Carter, M.E. Kerr, and Ouida Sebestyen are among the other fine contributors in this well-executed companion to Gallo's Sixteen and Visions. Sampling allowed, but so is a voracious downing of the entire book in one sitting.
