The authors have a talent for explaining the complex political, legal, and social issues that shaped the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the 26 amendments. The chapters on the Constitutional Convention and the fight for ratification of the 18th amendment (prohibition) and the 19th (women's suffrage) have a dramatic ""you are there"" flavor. Capsule physical descriptions and revealing quotations capture the incredible cast of characters from Alexander Hamilton to Susan B. Anthony. Landmark Supreme Court cases are simplified nicely. The issue of Constitutional interpretation by the Supreme Court is emphasized by highlighting the courts of Chief Justices John Marshall and Earl Warren. There is a note on sources consulted and a brief bibliography; unfortunately, documentation of the text is generic--""a historian said"" or ""someone said."" Photographs, index, full text of the Constitution.
