Way back in the cracker-barrel, goober-pea, tobacco-juice country lived Purdy Popejoy, a young lad who spent most of his time hankerin' after a new wagon. He set about earnin' money for that wagon, and purty soon had it fer himself. Sometimes the author forgets that she is telling her tale in mountain dialect, and her plotless story goes wearily on and on and on. The artist of the flat, black and white, unvaried illustrations has not interjected any ""zing"" into a book which needed it. And, the format is poor--too childish looking- for readers in this age group.
