by Dorothy C. Finkelhor ‧ RELEASE DATE: Jan. 1, 1978
A frank guide to aging, more awkwardly written than some and of most help to individuals or couples enjoying some financial independence and fairly good health. Finkelhor is direct about advice--you don't have to keep up with the Joneses or sacrifice for your children--and often uses lists as backups: ten steps to making successful decisions or ten reasons to continue sex or start anew. Get rid of your middle-age responsibilities, she counsels; know yourself, learn to like yourself, and decide what you want from your retirement years. Also, beware of common shoals, work at being physically and emotionally attractive, and prepare yourself for likely changes, the pivotal emotional events that cloud too many retirements--loss of income, spouse, family unity, community respect. Far less activating than Maggie Kuhn and less thorough on difficult detafis--homes, illness, etc.--but serviceable as a starter.
