Endangered, threatened, commercially exploited, and extinct plants--Hogner explains the difference (as established by government lists), describes several species that have been singled out for protection, and examines how wild plants fare in different types of surroundings (roadsides, ponds, mines, national forests). On the list: lady-slippers, many cacti, American ginseng, several ferns, three species of goldenrod, and several trees--American chestnut, American elm, certain cypress, sequoia. The message: ""DO NOT PICK."" Hogner's organization is a bit slack but her approach is reasonable, her style comfortable.
