GUIDE DOG

Roley Rolandson finds himself suddenly and totally blinded when a dog jumps him and a sabotaged package that he is delivering explodes. His dreams of a medical career ended, he bitterly asserts that his life is ended too. Hating dogs, but hating his helplessness more, he reluctantly agrees to try a guide dog, nearly allows himself to give that up too, until his dog proves her worth by saving him from his own dangerous willfulness. The plot is contrived and unoriginal; the sub-plots of Roley's romance and the search for the sender of the ill-fated package are pale after-thoughts; the characters' repeated admonitions to ""do the best you can with what you have"" boring. Still, the author creates a believable Roley, and the reader experiences his hopelessness and frustration. Information about guide dogs is unobtrusive and interesting. What might have been a fine book on a difficult subject is unfortunately only an acceptable one.
