by Dorothy Hinshaw Patent ‧ RELEASE DATE: April 15, 1990
A more detailed look at the 1988 fires than in Ekey's Fire! (1990; reviewed 1989, p. 1825/C-327); Patent gives fuller background on the ecological reasons for forest fires and is more specific about their benefits, including the improved nutritive value of grass and the greater variety of species and habitats resulting from them. Each book includes many excellent color photos; more of Patent's show wildlife, while Ekey emphasizes firefighting dramas. Patent is a first choice because of its broader coverage, exceptionally clear text, and more attractive format, but both books are worthy of purchase. Index.
