Penny, the little English girl first seen in The Birthday, visits a seaport during a school vacation at the home of Matthew. His grandfather is a custom's inspector and during a morning on the docks, the children board a boat to look it over. As accidental stowaways, they are bound across the channel for France. A friendly passenger and a breezy captain set matters to rights and it is a more plausible adventure than most easy readers offer.
