SEA CHANGE

Not quite fat and quite seventeen, Vicky Harbison played the part of the clown convincingly to her friends. Only her brother, sister, and best friend Marcia guessed that Vicky was sensitive about being the only non-dater during the summer. Snowie, a boy Vicky had known all her life, regarded her as a kid sister, while she silently idolized him. It is at Snowie's suggestion that Vicky applies for a job at the Marine Biological Lab working for a brilliant young scientist, Dr. Martello. Vicky's status and shape (she slims down) change after an unsuccessful, drastic blind date. She sees Snowie she develops a deep, ""everlasting"" crush on the scientist; she temporarily outgrows Marcia. The author follows two complicated romances in the background (those of Vicky's sister and her fiance and Dr. Martello and his first assistant, Loren), while directing her main attention to Vicky. Her picture of a girl moving through an awkward, important age has comical, sad and convincing elements. A well written, well rounded story.
