Just what it says--this 25th annual collection of the Mystery Writers of America stops short of violent death which has become analogous with the ""affectless society"" (a nice introduction here by the editor). A shining spectrum includes Stanley Ellin's novelty item about a man in the Novelty Business (viz. arson); Jeffrey Hudson's (he's Michael Crichton) commandingly expressed hostility of a man toward his psychiatrist; Eric Ambler's *** Michelin for the spy spotter; David Montross' ""Rape"" and Al Nussbaum's ""Shutterbug""--short shockers; Margaret Manners' neurasthenic writer trapped in her own ""Plot""; Lillian de la Torre and Dorothy B. Hughes--it's nice to have them back; and older (less) worthies, Michael Gilbert and John Dickson Cart, along with many others. Divers diversions of quality.
