THE NIGHT SHE DIED

The title refers to a murder, of course--that of young, attractive, repressed Mrs. Julie Holmes, stabbed one evening in her comfortable, small-town-England home. But it also refers to another night long ago, the night Julie ""died"" inside--when, as a child, she apparently witnessed (then blotted out) the murder of artist Annabel Dacre, a never-solved crime. So: is Julie's killer that bygone murderer, now afraid that Julie's memory of the murder has returned? Or is it one of the men--husband, boss, old flame--whom poor, nightmare-haunted Julie attracted but couldn't love? This double-batch of suspects makes for an unusually varied round of sleuthing (with a nice sense of delving into the past), done mostly by nice (but excessively, gooily sensitive) Inspector Luke Thanet. And though Simpson writes with more care than flair, this is a quiet, satisfying job in the P. D. James manner.
