With photographs by Myron Ehrenberg, here is another fine nature study by the same pair who did Trees and Their Story, Billy Goes Exploring etc. Beginning with plant evolution, the text briefly describes life on earth billions of years ago, and the important changes spore bearing plants underwent to become what they are today- the step from water to land being the biggest. The sections following on the various varieties of the three main divisions of spore bearers are written with the clarity and humor that the fascination of the subject deserves, and persuasively enough to make the most confirmed stay at homes want to go for walks in the woods. The photographs- close-ups and magnifications of the tiniest plants, as well as normal shots, are splendid. For older readers too.
