(YA) Reading aids to Faulkner may never reach the number or variety published for Finnegan's Wake, but they are nevertheless as helpful and even more welcome to students and dedicated readers. As Faulkner created it in all its parts, Yoknapatawpha County was the kind of place you had to grow up in if you were to keep landmarks, families and situations straight. This well organized book supplies genealogies and a history of the County as well as a map; the synopses of each published book and short story together with critical notes combine form an excellent readers' guide and memory-jogger. 172 characters are listed with identifying details. There is a biographical sketch of the Nobel Laureate and a short discussion of his style. Much more of a student's companion and comfort than Brooks' William Faulkner (1963, p. 1066.)
