MORNING SONG

With ingenuousness and innocence, this retraces the initial experiences of a young girl in an adult world, recaptures the buoyancy of an age which entertains high hopes, encounters disastrous defeats. Mary Millar's childhood in New York is foreshortened by the divorce of her parents, the death of Poppa whom she loved, and the responsibility of supporting her Russian-born mother and her brother. The debacle of her first job, sketching in a dress house, for which she was paid only in part; the glamor of becoming a showgirl at fifteen; her first dinner, her first speakeasy; her courtship by a rich man with four wives behind him, a courtship ended promptly by his domineering mother; finally her 16th birthday, and the realization that she is in love with Lefty, for whom- at 15- she had felt only friendship... A fragmentary portrayal of adolescence, the portrait of an engaging, enterprising youngster.
