A first novel from England this has as its background the London theater of today, and its central figure is Chick Bird who is determined not to return to repertory of the provinces. From grubby digs to dingy offices, to phantoms of jobs, Chick makes the rounds, edges into starvation, works at anything he can get, and encounters, in his small time odyssey, a whole world of raffish creatures. There are parties -- and beds, and, with one of his group on his way in the moving pictures, Chick, too, gets his first step up for a part. And there is Fay -- who catches up with him -- to make the future more secure. In a lingo that is almost incomprehensible, this is an unglamorized, staccato picture of show business, which is comic, if sometimes tasteless, in essence.
