A bye-bye baby way out into the year 1958 projects the bargain made between Joe Boyd, a middle-aged real estate man, and Mr. Appledgate, the devil. Joe, a wary operator, insists on an escape clause in the contract which offers him fame- as a baseball player- and the defeat of the Yankees in the pennant race. His phenomenal performance on the Washington Senators pushes the team up in front, but Joe's satisfactions are tempered by guilt; he causes the ruin of a player; he misses his wife, and he has too much conscience for the charms of Lola, one of Mr. Applegate's advocates. The season draws to a close and Joe is determined to return to his former life- in spite of Applegate's many mean manoeuvers to hold him- and at the end, in a last game, it is Applegate himself he must defeat on the field.... Not too wild a pitch to the market of It Happens Every Spring, this has its moments of fantasy- and fun- but strictly home-grown.
