THE COMMONSENSE BOOK OF BABY AND CHILD CARE

Twice postponed, this is now scheduled for May 22. Reported P. 501 as follows:- This is the book to bring parents up to date on the bringing up of children. Here, for the first time, is a book of infant and child care which combines basic physical and medical information with psychological interpretation, which makes available -- and easily accessible- the evidence of the specialists (Gesell, Levy, etc.) and translates modern theory into the actuality of handling your child. Throughout there is a consideration of emotional factors -- ignored by the standard texts, Bartlett and Holt, and more recently Bundesen. From the everyday practicalities -- the right equipment -- the right clothes, on to feeding, breast and bottle, growth and development, first ailments and first habits, play activities, sleeping patterns, diet, etc. The one-year-old, the two-year-old, and on up with their specific age trends and needs. Diseases and illnesses and what to do -- or to let your doctor decide to do. Special problems of the premature, the adopted or the handicapped child; the working mother; the nursery school, etc. And throughout, whether in relation to weaning, toilet training, feeding, sex, the second child, schooling -- the psychological and emotional implications are coordinated with the physical. Dr. Spock is never pedantic, never regimented, but reassuring, flexible and interpretative -- approaching childhood and parenthood in terms of the maximum case and enjoyment. Fully indexed. Amusingly illustrated in line.
